How It Works

aql® act as a robust edge-of-network interface : aql® operate 5 different points of presence (POP's) within the UK and have significant, resilient interconnects for voice, data and messaging with key partner networks.

aql® is more than just a "mobile virtual network enabler", but also an intermediate carrier to act as the interface between the mobile network and you, the telecommunications provider.

The diagram below shows the flow of data between the respective networks.

The Unbundled Model

The engineering model allows all calls (2) and mobile messaging (10) sent by the mobile handset (1) to be passed transparently by the mobile carrier directly to the aql® network. From here, the calls and messaging are under the direct control of aql®. This allows aql® to either terminate these calls on behalf of a switchless reseller, or to pass the calls to a third party network for termination.

Wholesale Transit

The transit legs (2) and (6) are each charged at a low per-minute rate. This is the only charge for conveying the call to-or-from the mobile network.

Similarly, any calls or SMS passed by a third party to aql® (either via a TDM or SIP interconnect) will be seamlessly conveyed to the handset at a wholesale access rate.

999

The exception to the routing model is 999 access. All 999 calls are routed directly from the mobile handset to the emergency operator. This provides a reliable mechanism for emergency calling, defaulting to the "3" network standard arrangement. This arrangement is also beneficial for IP telephony operators who require a more robust 999 service.
